About Judy
Judy was a typical antsy child. When her mother brought her to have pictures
taken, the photographer put tape on her hand to keep her occupied. However,
Judy was more interested in exploring and using the tape than in simply
peeling it from her hand. Even at such a young age, her desire to create was
evident! Tape, crayons and paper became pocketbooks and new clothes for
paper dolls. She was blessed to be surrounded by people who fostered these
creative outlets. Judy had her first fabric stash at age five and still remembers
getting "butterflies" when her mom would add another piece to the pile. This
love eventually led to a degree in Home Economics and a career in teaching.
As a teacher, she collected fabric scraps from students. Her original intent was to use them to make a memory quilt: however, it led her down another path, that of a fiber artist.
Over the years, Judy's artistic journey has led her from seamstress to teacher to fiber artist. Her love of surface design led her to creating unique fabrics. Dyeing, marbling, screening, discharging and inkjet printing are some of the processes she embraces - both for personal and professional use. She has taken workshops along the way but is essentially self-taught.
Her work has been exhibited on national and international levels, featured in books and magazines and held in public and private collections. She is the author of two books - Machine Needlelace and Other Embellishment Techniques and Creative Marbling on Fabric.
She shares her heart and home with her husband John and four furry studio assistants - Wendy, Scooter, Zoey and Molly. They all live in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina.
